I met Roger through a mutual friend. If I was lucky, I got to visit with Roger on the porch of his apartment building for about 10-15 minutes before heading off to pick-up my daughter — who went to school nearby. Roger was a very pleasant gentleman to chat with about stuff: the weather, books, and so forth. Even if there was nothing to talk about, it was nice just sitting there in companionable silence. Over time, I learned he did some xartooning back in the day — something I did at one point, too. Getting to see some of Roger’s work — and sharing my work with him — felt like a blessing.
Through these visits, I began to view Roger as a beloved relative. I couldn’t help but feel love towards him and he became one of my favorite people in this world. Knowing these porch visits will never happen again hurts like crazy, yet I will always cherish them.
