Eivind Berge

Eivind Berge, 83, of Rollinsford NH, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2022 with his daughter Sandy, and granddaughters Chelsea and Morgan by his side.

Eivind was born April 21, 1939, in Kristiansand, Norway, son of the late Christian and Gudren Berge. He joined the Merchant Marines when he was 18, for 2 ½ years.  He then came to America sponsored by his Uncle Eivind. He settled in New Jersey, where he began working in carpentry and eventually became a house painter. This is where Eivind met his late wife, Judy, at a church youth group. After spending many years camping in both Maine and New Hampshire he moved to NH with his wife and two children Brian & Sandy. He enjoyed camping, fishing, square dancing, and cross country skiing.

Papa, as we called him after he became a grandfather, loved the ocean, ships, flowers, gardening, working out in the yard, burning in the fire pit, going to the gym, and driving his BMW Z3 aka “Little Car.” He made many trips to Norway over the years to visit his family and spend time on the island of Jomfruland where his brother had a cabin. He spent time swimming, boating, fishing, and catching king crab.

Eivind is predeceased by his wife, Judy Lee (VanBeekum) Berge; son, Brian Berge; and brother, Kjell Berge. He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Berge, and granddaughters Chelsea and Morgan of Rollinsford NH; his sister, Kari Bergst⌀l and her husband Roald of Kristiansand Norway; and nieces and nephews both in Norway and the States.

A celebration of his life will take place in the spring.

Please share a story, a memory and/or some photos.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

    Sandy,

I am so sorry for your loss. I sent your Dad a Christmas card this year and thanked him for always making me feel at home with your family. I told him I hoped he was still sharing his gardening tips and stories of growing up in Norway-I always enjoyed our chats. I remember how important it was to him to take the “girls” on vacation and to spend time together like when you all went to Puerto Rico. I hope those memories and knowing he is with your Mom and Brian bring you comfort in the days ahead.

Love and hugs to you, Chelsea and Morgan,
    Kathy

    Dear Sandy, Chelsea & Morgan,

Martha and I are saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend and cousin, Eivind. He was always so ready to lend a hand and sincere about his family and his Norway roots. Eivind was very helpful to his father-in-law, my Uncle Case Van Beekum, He was so proud of his daughter and granddaughters, especially after the untimely deaths of Judy and Brian.

Goodby my good friend. We will miss you!

    Sandy , Chelsea and Morgan,
My heart was so heavy hearing about my dear friend, I wish I had known he was ill, I would have come to see him.
He and I had so many fun memories that we shared, long chats, playing cards, dancing in the kitchen, meals with you, visiting with him at the home you lived in growing up then your new home in his cute apartment.
I was reunited with your dad and mother, my dear friend , at square dancing classes which then continued the friendship that had started a few years earlier.
I was blessed to spend many hours with your mom during her illness , I wish I had been able to do the same with your dad and grandfather.
He adored all of you, you were his pride and joy.
You brought happiness and so much love into his life.
I am positive when you think of him, a smile will appear remembering the fun years that you shared together, at times tears will appear , then when the time is right that smile will again reappear .
I will miss seeing him , hearing about his trip to Norway, the news about you and that warm hug he loved giving so freely
    Sending caring thoughts
    Hugs and love
