Robert H. “Chip” Johnston

Rochester, NH – Robert H. “Chip” Johnston, 80, of Rochester, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 9th, 2021 after a brief illness.

Robert was born in Waterville, ME on August 23, 1940 and raised in Portsmouth, NH by his parents, the late Walter and Dorothy (Secord) Johnston.

He retired from the US Navy where he served 20 years and completed 3 tours of duty to Vietnam.

He had been a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Moose Club.

An avid sports fan, he loved watching the Red Sox, Celtics and his favorite, the Bruins. He enjoyed NASCAR, and in the early 80’s he was a flagman at Star Speedway and Hudson Speedway.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Norma Jean (Shaw) Johnston; 4 step children, Kevin Punty and his wife Elena, Michael Punty and his wife Christine, Donna Clements and her husband James, and Albert Punty III; 16 grandchildren, Marlen, Marvin, Elena, Kimberly, Scott, Zachary, Christopher, Stephanie, Holly, Anthony, Stephen, Monica, Thomas, Heather, Chelsea, Brijit; 17 great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Braelyn, Joslyn, Marvin Jr, Angel, Alejandro, Carlos, Ruben, Layla, Johnathan, Ilianna, Austin, Ruben, Annabel, Isabelle, Carson, Willow; brothers Walter Johnston and his wife Fredah of Missouri, James Johnston and his wife Sue; brother-in-law, Dennis McAtavey and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John Johnston and his sister Gertrude “Trudy” McAtavey.

All services will be private.
