Ipswich, MA – Paul Allen Bates, long-term resident of Ipswich, passed away on April 19 at age 79. He was born and raised in Nashua, NH and graduated from Nashua High in 1956 and UNH in 1961.  “Bing”, as he was known by his many elderly relatives, was a model train enthusiast and an avid reader with a penchant for science fiction. In the mid-1950s, at the beginning of the space travel boom, he was the first person in line at City Hall to sign up to be a potential astronaut. Paul was a world traveler for many years with many stories to tell.  Upon returning to the US, he opened “The Inferno”, an iconic college bar in Newmarket NH. Most of his adult life, however, he settled into teaching the social sciences at private schools and North Shore Community College.  He became a prolific collector of old toys, stamps, coins, books, model trains and miscellanea.

He is survived by his two sisters, Candy Allard of FL and Judy Graves of NC, two nieces, Maya Bireley of RI and Tracy Allard of TX and one nephew, Rebel Allard of NH.

Paul was always a loner and a bit eccentric; he shunned technology and often preferred the company of cats over most humans.  If you would like to honor Paul’s memory, please adopt a cat.  He would love that.

When I met Paul, he was my professor at NSCC, but we privately became solid and unique friends. At the time , I was a police officer in Gloucester and when I retired, I moved to the mountains of West Texas! He came to visit me, flying in to El Paso where I picked him up. He loved it here. I recently adopted a kitten in his honor ! What a special man. We had Sunday morning phone visits until his last hospital stay. Then I senr him cards and photos of my horse, kitten, and dog. I will miss him so very much.
My condolences to his family and all. He taught me so much and encouraged my creativity. I will do things in his honor and I know I will feel feel him by my side.

Paul and I were colleagues at North Shore Community College for many years. I enjoyed talking to him about trains and his other hobbies. Paul was friendly and we shared common interests. He impressed me with his non-traditional approach to teaching. May Paul rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. My condolences to the Paul Bates family. Professor Emeritus Sheldon Brown

Condolence from Darcy Bates on August 2nd, 2019 3:26 pm

My name is Darcy Ann Bates. I am a legal (not blood) sister of Paul. My father returned from WW2 (51 when i was born, my mom his 2nd wife), and adopted Paul. My dads obituary acknowledges him as his son, he passed in Sept. of 1992. Paul used to come by my house after teaching, every Monday night, and sit with my dad, whom he called his mentor. He would go to Land& Sea and get a nice Seafood Plate and talk with my dad. Since I was so enthralled with their talks, I was able to sit with them and listen for a while. After my dad passed, on Labor Day weekend (which Paul had told me it would be then ( my dad was ill ) because my dad worked hard and also traveled the world) . I went to visit him a few times, and he always welcomed me. By the way, my dad used to help him fix those train sets many years ago in our basement. The memories of him and his Antique cars and wisdom will last me forever…The Sunoco train car was my dads favorite. Donald R. Bates…. 05/12/1917 – 09/06/1992. thank You Paul for the infinite wisdom you gave me about life. I will always honor you. You and my Dad were my greatest teachers… Peace as always

Paul was my college professor in 1977,:and became a close friend of mine and my wife Meredith. I remember the college meetings held at his home. Over the years Paul and I would talk about many things, he especially loved talking with Meredith about the kids in his classes being unprepared and she would share her insight as she worked at a High School. We spoke just a few months ago, as he was headed to rehab. He was a straight shooter and a very good friend to us both rest in peace my friend.

Paul was a close and dear friend during our high school an college years together. It saddens me that we missed an opportunity to get together again before he passed on. My condolences to all of you who also shared his genuine friendship.
