South Yarmouth, MA – Matthew Hastings died on January 30th surrounded by his loving family, gathered at his bedside at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire.
He was born on September 2, 1977 in Worcester, MA, the son of Michael J. Hastings of Greenville, ME and Barbara Kimball of Hardwick, MA. His brother and sisters include Sean M. Hastings of Rio Rico, AZ; Jennifer M. Hastings of New York City; and Renee Brown, who resides in Madison, GA. He leaves behind a niece and two nephews, Kashmir Hastings, of Rio Rico, AZ, as well as Alex Brown and Garrett Brown of Madison, GA. He also leaves many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was much loved by his partner of many years, Kate Conery of S. Yarmouth, MA, as well as many friends on Cape Cod and the Hudson Valley, particularly New Paltz, NY where he spent his youth. He attended Poughkeepsie Day School and Kildonan, and he studied for a year at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA.
Matt worked independently as a painter and carpenter on Cape Cod. He loved the outdoors, swimming in the sea and kettle ponds on the Cape, and he rode his mountain bike through the wilder, undeveloped land near his home in South Yarmouth. He also rode the Mid- Cape bike trails. He enjoyed hiking and climbing in the mountains of New Paltz, NY and out West where he traveled with friends, as well as his brother.
He was known for his great sense of humor and strong qualities of presence. His enthusiasms were boundless, including his love of playing guitar, drawing, and movies.
The family plans to gather in many of Matt’s favorite places and remember his adventurous spirit. There are no official services planned.

I knew him since he was four or five. Sweet kid. We always connected really well. Lost contact these last few years, but fondly remember discussions about music and psychology, his love of the pristine air and skies of the southwest at night. his mastery of the craft of painting, his deliberate and precise way of working. His sly humor. His even temper. His open mind, his receptivity to all kinds of ways of life. It was a pleasure to know him.
