For many years, sightings of Ardmore’s Princess Anne Beller were frequent along Montgomery Ave., Suburban Square storefronts, and streets in and around Llanfair. She walked with grace and distinction; a worldly woman who was refined and educated with a witty smile with one of the sharpest minds I ever came across. From 1979-1980 she was a second mother to me, Along with her son Dan and then once returning home from Australia, Paul we lived in her home while I was finishing a degree in Psychology, spending most waking hours honing jazz skills in local venues and practicing scales & arpeggios in a 2nd floor bedroom. Dan & Paul who she loved dearly: Imagine a classical pedal steel virtuoso waking up at 5:00 am to practice while his rockin’ brother returned night after night around 5:00am….That magical time 38 years ago Anne was writing a book I believe called Fat & Thin…an anthropological thesis about the human weight issue. And how she loved ANYTHING Beatles! Especially around Christmas….the closest thing to a Dickens novel I ever experienced. I visited the home on Llanfair maybe a dozen times long after I moved out of my $35/mo room to visit Anne to just talk and listen to her pearls of wisdom because she was a 2nd mother to me. I know that souls like Anne Beller stick around for the good of mankind. Regal as the Statue of Liberty, smarter than most and sensitive as an artist Anne Beller will always be a part of my consciousness.
